The idea of writing a blog for a living can be very appealing. The thought of being able to work for yourself when you want and where you want can be desirable. However you may get stuck when choosing a niche for your blog.
Follow Your Passion
It is always a good plan to choose a niche that you are interested in; something that can get you motivated to do research or to write. This is not so important if you are going to farm out the writing side of the blog. It is possible to get staff to do all the work on your blog, the writing and traffic building side, etc., but if not, you will want to pick a subject that you have a bit of passion for.
Don’t spend too much time on your choice. There is nothing wrong with starting a niche and changing to another one later. You can also run a few blogs at the same time with different themes.
Choose A Profitable Niche
Choose a niche in market where people are spending money. If your blog is very popular it is possible make money from any theme you choose, but of course some are more profitable than others. Subjects that cater to customers who are looking for reviews and advice about products that can be bought online are a good choice.
If You Are Using SEO Make Sure Your Niche Is Winnable
If you are planning on driving traffic to your blog from the search engines you will need to make sure your niche is winnable. If you are using SEO in your blog your niche will be a winnable keyword. Look at the competition for your chosen keyword by entering it into Google and seeing what sites come up in the results. If the first page is full of well established, professional, popular sites with endless pages of content you may well have a job on your hands to beat them to the top place.
Choose a keyword that when entered in Google brings up websites that you feel you can beat or at least compete with. This is not so important if you will be getting your traffic from social networks or ads.
Most importantly, take action! Don’t waste unnecessary time planning and fussing. It’s easier to steer a car when it is moving.
